Current Understanding
Based on our current knowledge, hyaluronic acid (HA) injection lack a practical, precise, and reproducible diagnostic tool for creating a treatment plan.
Introducing the NAU Method
We present the NAU Method, a two-step diagnostic and treatment planning tool. This algorithm is designed based on a comprehensive review of scientific literature related to clinical anatomy and the latest safe injection techniques using dynamic hyaluronic acid fillers.
First Step: Diagnosis
The NAU Method offers a diagnostic tool for a complete facial assessment, analyzing 6 New Aesthetic Units (NAUs). Each NAU can have between 1 and 4 subunits. A score from 1 to 5 is assigned to each NAU based on 5 parameters: skin quality, asymmetry, volume loss, quality of the transition zone with neighboring units. A score of 1 indicates severe deficiency, while a score of 5 signifies no deficiency. This provides a clear overview of which NAUs require treatment and the order in which to proceed for optimal full-face treatment planning.
Second Step: Treatment Planning
For each NAU, we have established the safest treatment techniques for HA filler injections based on a literature review. We also recommend optimal products, particularly those from Teoxane SA, Geneva, Switzerland.
Advantages of the NAU Method
Finally, the NAU Method enhances communication with patients, enables the retention of all diagnostic data, treatment plans, products used, and their quantities for future treatments and statistical analysis.
